Play Synopsis

Set in the suburbs of New Jersey, "Kimberly Akimbo" is a hilarious and heartfelt story about a teenager with a rare condition that causes her to age four and a half times faster than normal. At sixteen, Kimberly looks like a woman in her sixties, yet she navigates the typical trials of adolescence—first crushes, family secrets, and a desire to truly live—while surrounded by her delightfully dysfunctional family. It's a beautifully quirky coming-of-age story that reminds us all that life is short, and every moment is worth seizing. Waverly Community Theater will be performing the "Kimberly Akimbo" play, not the musical.

Character Synopses

Kimberly is sixteen but appears much older because of a rare (fictional) aging disorder. She’s intelligent, perceptive, and often wiser than the adults around her. She longs for normal teenage experiences: friends, romance, and a sense of belonging, but she’s also aware that her time is limited. The actor should be able to express both the physical presence of an older woman and the emotional energy of a teenager.

Kimberly Levaco (F, 60+ to play 16 y.o.):
Buddy Levaco (M, Mid 30s-40s):

Kimberly’s father: A man with a gentle heart and a weak backbone. He drinks too much and uses humor to hide his sense of failure. Buddy is not cruel, but he’s unreliable and emotionally lost. He wants to do right by his family but lacks the maturity or stability to make lasting change. His love for Kimberly is genuine, but his inability to take responsibility often undermines it.

Pattie Levaco (F, Mid 30s – 40s):

Kimberly’s mother: High-strung, self-centered, and constantly overwhelmed, Pattie has a hard time accepting reality. She masks her fear and guilt with sarcasm and self-pity. There’s love beneath her chaos, but she doesn’t know how to show it. This role requires solid comedic timing. Pattie is 8 months pregnant throughout the duration of the show. She has bandages wrapping up both hands, and walks with crutches for several scenes.

Debra (F, Mid 30s – 40s):

Pattie’s sister and Kimberly’s aunt: Debra is unapologetically herself — bold, funny, and always scheming for her next move. An ex (and possibly future) con. Beneath her chaotic energy is a deep need for connection and belonging. She’s both comic relief and a surprising source of heart.

Jeff (M, 15 – 25 to play 16 y.o.):

A classmate of Kimberly’s: Jeff is intelligent, quirky, and endearingly awkward. A lover of D&D and the “puzzleistic arts”.  He shares Kimberly’s sense of humor, and becomes her closest friend and potential love interest. His presence gives her a glimpse of a normal teenage experience.

Audition Process

Welcome to our community! Auditions begin with a simple first step: filling out a rehearsal schedule conflict form. This helps us understand your availability so we can plan a smooth production for everyone involved.

Once you've checked in, everyone interested in auditioning for a character will participate in a cold read of the script. People who are just interested in the crew will not need to cold read.

Don't feel pressured to prepare anything in advance. We provide everything you need at the audition, so just bring yourself and your enthusiasm for theater!

Crew Needed!

Along with the cast, a crew will also be needed for this production. Backstage opportunities include light, sound, costume, and stagecrew. Prospective crew members should attend one of the two audition dates to receive important information about the production, and fill out a conflict sheet.
